How to play the
Spades Game
In order to play
Spades you need a standard deck of 52 cards. The
game uses all cards in a regular way (Aces are the
highest, 2 are the lowest ranks), but Spades are the
only trumps.
The target aim is to
win the game by reaching 500 (in some cases 200)
points. The rules are simple:
- Each player
receives 13 cards. Look at your cards, calculate
how many tricks you will have and make a bid.
The bidding starts from the first player on the
left hand of the dealer and goes clockwise.
- There is only 1
round of bids. You may bid from 0 to 13. Pass is
not allowed.
- You may bid Nil,
which means to win zero tricks during the next
hand. If you succeed in your bid you receive 100
points, otherwise you receive a penalty – 100
points less.
- You may bid
double Nil, which means to make the bid without
seeing the cards (known as well as Blind Nil).
If you succeed in your bid you receive 200
points, otherwise you receive a penalty – 200
points less.
- Your aim during
the game is to fulfill your bid.
- The player who
bids first starts the game. He has to play any
other suit, but not Spades. The only exception
is the situation when he has only Spades.
- Each of the
players has to follow the particular suit. In
case the player has no cards from this suit he
may play other suit or Spades. The player who
gives the highest card from the suit or Spades
wins the trick. If two or more players give
Spades, the player, who gives the highest rank
of Spades, wins the trick.
- No one of the
players may lead with Spades until the Spades
are not broken. This may happen when a player
cannot follow the suit or when he has no other
cards except Spades.
