Origins of the
Spades Game
The Spades game was invented
in the United States, probably in Cincinnati (OH), around
1937 or 1939. Some opinions exist that it descends
originally from Whist game. Many authors support the idea
for kindred between Spades and other trick games like Bridge
and Pinochle, where bidding and partnership are key points
in the game. But it is really hard to ascertain the exact
background of the game.
The modern Spades
were very popular in college campuses in the 40s.
The game was played everywhere, due to it very quick
action and possibilities for advanced play. However,
it had no international popularity.
Moving together with American soldiers, Spades
became quite popular in Europe during the Second
World War. It was possible the soldiers to play the
game in any break between the battles.
After the WWII the
game was spread in Germany, due to the presence of
the American troops. |
