The three versions of the Spades game

There are several versions of Spades game, but the most popular are the Individual game, Cutthroat and the Partner game.

The Individual Spades

The game is played by 4 persons, but each of the players participates on his own account – there is no external help by a partner. The deck is spread so as each player to have 13 cards.

You may bid from 1 to 13 tricks. Nil and Blind Nil are also allowed.

Every trick from your bid brings you 10 points. There is a penalty of 10 points for each unachieved trick from your bid. If you have tricks in addition to your bid, each trick (called bag) brings you 1 point. The additional tricks are great as long as you they become 10. There is a penalty of 100 points for every 10 bags.

The Cutthroat Spades

This version is played by 3 persons. Each of the persons has 17 cards to play with. The needles 52nd card remains obscure within this hand. You can bid between 1 and 17 tricks. Both Nil and Blind Nil are acceptable. The scoring and the rules remain the same as in the case of Individual Spades.

The Partner Spades

This is a game for two teams of two persons each. The partner players are situated across the table. The player on the left side of the dealer bids first. The bids of the partners are summed up. The aim of the team during the particular hand is to reach the tricks of the two players.

There are some additional rules concerning Nil and Blind Nil. If one of the partners bid Nil, he has to complete the bid; otherwise the team receives a penalty of 100 points. It is possible the two partners to bid Nil. If they succeed, the team wins 200 points.

If they fail, the ream receives a penalty of 200 points. If only one of the players succeed, the reward and the penalty are neutralized.

In the case of Blind Nil bidding of one of the partners, it is allowed after the round of bids he to exchange 3 cards with his partner. In case of Blind Nil bid made by both of the partners, no cards are exchanged. The scoring is the same like in the case of Nil, but the reward and the penalty are double – 200 points.
